About The Artist
Having been a professional artist for over forty years, I have done a lot of experimenting which has given me a unique look in art. Using my plein air paintings, on-site sketches and my travel photographs, I make batiks and oil and acrylic paintings of places and things I have seen and love. If I am making a batik I will make detailed drawings of my designs before beginning the process of drawing with hot wax on cloth. I am able to produce the image using 30 - 50 dye baths to achieve the colors I need before removing most of the wax. I often add encaustic or acrylic to enhance the texture and add depth. If I am doing a studio oil or acrylic I will make a value drawing on paper before I start the actual painting. I love clean, pure color and try to paint alla prima or “wet on wet” as much as possible. As a former zoologist, I love animals and they are frequently the focus of my work. The colors and textures of nature intrigue me and guide my choices of subject.
My art is included in the permanent collection of five art museums, part of many private and corporate collections, and has been included in both art magazines and books. I am the author/illustrator of three children’s books. With my artistic vision I have loved capturing a moment in time that facilitates a love of nature and brings happiness to many.
